I seem to begin many sentences lately with "In my day," as in "In my day, the World Series ENDED in the second week of October not the first week in November." I'm not quite sure where "my day" went, but I am quite sure that it's gone. Is yours? If you remember any of the following, it probably is!
The little "C" in the TV Guide listings that signified a show was being broadcast in color.
Nickel candy.
Phone booths.
Getting a free glass with every fill-up.
Tops. A top that not only spun, but lit up and made noise was a high-tech toy.
S. S. Kresge's and F. W. Woolworth's.
Guy Lombardo on New Year's Eve.
Arriving at school and hanging your coat in the cloak room and not in a locker.
Records for kids that were stamped on bright red or yellow vinyl.
Considering a meal at McDonald's a rare treat because there were so few of the "drive-ins" around.
Watching Where the Action Is or Dark Shadows after school.
Transistor radios.
The original Sweet Tart that was as big as a horse pill, hard as a diamond, and took several days (occassionally at the cost of a couple of teeth) to eat.
"Sock it to me."
What do you say, readers? I'm sure you have some items to add to the list!
Back in my day wasn't too long ago, but there are a few things I miss :)
I was just thinking the other day that I missed the Saturday morning PSAs with Captain O.G. Readmore, the animated cat that encouraged kids to read.
And I used to love going to the IGA where I grew up because it had the Chicken Cluck-Cluck quarter machine that laid an egg with a cheap little prize inside (and I could also buy a 5-pack of gum for a quarter). The grocery stores still sold soda in glass bottles.
