Okay, so my porch thermometer says 98 degrees as I write this at 1:08 on Tuesday afternoon, which means that we'll break 100 later today and maybe even set a record, which is 100 in Hagerstown for this day. (The ole porch thermometer eventually got up to 118.) Even if I were typing this outside right now, I would still say that summer is better than winter. For one thing, when it's hot, you need to slow down and do less. When it's cold you have to speed up and stay active. Doing less always seems more appealing to me.
Furthermore, heat seems to register on the skin, which is easy to cool. Just find an air-conditioned building, for example. Remember when this used to be a selling point for movie theaters? If it's really hot, go to the grocery store. Our local Martin's is kept at an air-temperature of approximately 45 degrees throughout the summer. If you can't find some air-conditioning, you can always just sweat. The skin will cool itself. Cold, on the other hand, seems to register inside a person, hence the expression, "chilled to the bone." (No one ever says "hot to the bone.") Once you're that cold, you can put on more layers, but underneath those 6 sweaters you're still cold. And now you can't move. A hot shower can remedy that kind of cold, but sooner or later, you gotta come out of there and we all know that the bathroom temperature will seem chilly compared to the water temperature.
Of course, in the summer the grass needs to be cut. However, now that we have entered a drought, my lawn is all brown, so the seasons are a wash on that score.
Baseball is played in the summer. This would be a good enough reason to prefer summer to winter even if I looked out now and saw that my lawn had burst into flames.
As if all those reasons aren't enough, here's another one:
Heat shimmers don't need shoveling.
I rest my case. In fact, I rest it in the shade with a nice cold sweet tea, which I'll enjoy while supervising the clouds to make sure that they cross the sky just right while I'm waiting for tonight's ballgame.
