Memorial Day turned into Christmas on Monday in New Market. Rebels General Manager Bruce Alger has long referred to the first day of practice as his "second Christmas" and he was gracious enough to share it with me again this year. Twenty-two Rebels took the field on a summery Memorial Day morning and Head Coach Corey Paluga ran the team through several defensive situations.
Front Row Fred and daughter Melissa were on hand to observe the first practice, even arriving in time to watch the boys stretch. Fred suggested that I should get out there and stretch, but I assured him that I already had. That is to say, I stretched my stomach at the Southern Kitchen with some sausage gravy, biscuits, and home fries, and that was all the stretching that I intended to do.
As I sat in the press box, watching the Rebels run through their workout, and Jim Weissenborn and his sign crew work on the outfield fence, I kept thinking about this time last year, when the work on Safe at Home was beginning in earnest. I wondered what detail that I was observing might make it into the book were I writing it this year. In the end, I was just happy that such a fine breakfast made it into me.
How could you possibly eat any other sausage gravy after having mine? HUMPH! Oh--this is about baseball--you distracted me for a second! Looks like that practice is paying off. After the first 2 games the Rebels are looking pretty good. That must be because my "boys" eat my sausage gravy exclusively!
**this is known in the literary world as a circular post** ;o}
