As though he was trying to prove this blog prescient, 47 year old Jamie Moyer became the oldest pitcher ever to throw a shutout when he blanked the Braves 7-0 on only 2 hits last Friday, two days after we discussed the oldest players ever to appear in the major leagues. If Moyer is still pitching 12 years from now, he'll tie Satchel Paige's record. . . .
. . . Carl Pavano had walked only 3 batters in 22 innings coming into Friday night's game against the Orioles. Miguel Tejada, who would define the strike zone as reaching from ankles to eyeballs, had walked only 3 times on the season. Naturally, Pavano walked Tejada. The Twins right-hander walked two other batters in the game to double his season total. . . .
. . . On Saturday, 0-4 Oriole Jeremy Guthrie faced 4-0 Francisco Liriano of the Twins who had surrendered only 3 runs on the entire season. The Orioles, one of the weakest offensive teams so far scored 5 runs off the Minnesota southpaw in 6 innings. . . .
All indications are that the New Market Rebels will have a very strong offense this year. In any case, the truly good note for this Monday morning is that the Rebels season opens in just 24 days!
