"Going green" is a popular new trend, but it seems to me that there is nothing new about it at all. A great deal of going green involves doing things the way our parents and grandparents and even our long-gone ancestors did it. This occurred to me the other day when I was hanging out the wash. Drying laundry outdoors appears on many lists concerning how individuals can "go green." Apparently, I've been way ahead of my time for all these years.
I don't understand why anyone would not hang out laundry. Besides saving on your electric bill (a wise thing to do in any economy) the smell of line-dried clothes, especially in the Spring ranks right up there with the aroma of fresh-baked brownies or that wonderful scent of fresh potato chips that greets you when you walk into the Route 11 Potato Chip plant in Mt. Jackson.
I know that some folks are sheepish about hanging their underwear for all to see, but I say that it is better to hang it out and assure your neighbors, that indeed, you do wear underwear, than never to hang any in the yard and leave the question in doubt.
I love to hang out the wash, probably because it is mindless, yet it provides a sense of accomplishment. And an empty mind is easily filled with the birds' singing, the scent of the grass, and the warmth of the sun. Hanging out the laundry is one of those activities that brings the pace of life down to its proper speed. You have never heard of anyone frantically hanging laundry, and you can't really hang laundry in a frenzy even if you try.
Hanging out the laundry is not only one small step in saving the planet, it can be one small step in saving your sanity.
